When our tour bus was pulling up to a company with a haluing truck the size of a whale, I don't think anyone had any idea what we were getting ourselves into as a group of MBAs, law students, and MEMs. Komatsu happens to be a successful company from Japan who jointly works together with Cummins to supply hauling and mining trucks and vehicles to mines in Chile and South America. A lot of this may seem standard such as selling through distributors, maintaining relationships with customers, and growing into other countries. What I thought was shocking was the amount of time and investment the company puts into educating their employees for safe and proper operation of huge equipment.
Komatsu had equipment from old vehicles for practice to circuit labs to understand the settings on machinery to use in mining operations. It felt good to know the company cared about the education and career development of their employees and allowed any type of technical or social and emotional training. As an engineer in my background, this kind of thing is not uncommon but it seemed like Komatsu's training was well valued and appreciated by everyone there. That can be very difficult to find in engineering and heavy industry companies like Komatsu.
