On our bus ride to Farmacias Ahumada, Gail said that Chileans are hypochondriacs. I wasn’t going to take one Chileans opinion as fact, until I saw the numbers. Farmacias Ahumada operates in Chile and Mexico. In Chile, they have 454 stores and gross $700M in sales. In Mexico, they have 1,100 stores and gross $895 in sales. Even with more than double the stores, Mexico only makes 21% more revenue. Is this because Mexico has a lower per capita income? Is this a cultural difference? Are Chileans in fact hypochondriacs? I didn’t ask. Although I’m pretty sure Carlos, the Head of Security, wouldn’t fall prey to the hypochondriac fever, other Chileans might. I did see a lot of Farmacias Ahumada as we drove around Santiago.
Another element that impressed me about Farmacias Ahumada was their diversity of stores. They seemed to have a store for many different segments: with parking, without parking, high-end, low-end, specifically for women, or more or less focused on pharmaceutical products. They have clearly done their homework on defining market segments and understanding what their stores need to carry and where they need to be located. I was impressed by the variety and specificity.
Thank you to the Farmacias Ahumada team for spending the morning with us!
