On the 4th day of our trip in Chile, we had a great conversation with Chilean people in INACAP, which is an IT school in Santiago. There are four Chilean people in our group, one of them is an entrepreneur, one is a student at INACAP,the rest of them are both working for Chile government. Our conversation was not going very well because of the language problem, so we tried to learn about the Chilean entrepreneurship from them as much as we could in limited time.
Isabel, the entrepreneur at our table, told us that it is very difficult for Chilean entrepreneurs get funds from government because the government does not know how to evaluate entrepreneurship, or just is afraid of failure. During the meeting, the other Chileans also confirmed that the lack of funds is one of the major obstacles of Chilean entrepreneurship. The most of solutions raised by out classmates were about cultivate the entrepreneurial mentality of Chilean people through education. This solution sounds reasonable, but it will take a long time to change the mentality of a generation. Why do not we find a method to help current entrepreneurs in Chile?
I am from China and have been seeing the China's development in the past decades. One of the major drive of economy was that the government encouraged foreign investors to come to China. Since Chinese government had no idea about how to develop, they invited foreigners to their country and learned from them. Speaking of Chile, it is a very attractive emerging market. Numerous foreign investors must be seeking investment opportunities in Chile. Since Chilean government is afraid of failure and do not know about evaluation, why do not they ask someone who is professional in evaluation or who has no fear of failure? 'Do not stop eating because of the fear of choking' is an ancient proverb in China, Chilean government should try some new ideas to encourage entrepreneurs instead of letting them down.
