On Wednesday, the 9th of March, our group was lucky to visit Komatsu, a Japanese equipment manufacturing leader. They have four main industries that they cater to: mining, construction, forestry and industrial. In Chile, the largest industry that they supply is the mining industry, accounting for 84% of their annual sales. The speakers walked us through doing business in Chile and exposed their greatest challenge which was finding and developing different distributers in surrounding companies. Another challenge that they face is retaining their employees and technicians. They often find that after placing their employees through the long and detailed training process they then leave to go work for a different company, transferring the skill and best practices of Komatsu. In spite of these challenges, the Chile branch is still pushing hard to attain their mission; to become the global leader for training employees in the Komatsu world. In order to attain this goal they treat the training program as a transparent professional development plan. They have an online platform that allows their employees to know their exact title and what training is necessary for them to move up in ranks.
