I enjoyed our visit to Wenco (headquarters). Various presentations by different individuals was a nice touch. The people seemed enthusiastic and enjoyed explaining what they did. I learned that Wenco constantly focuses on innovating their products to provide the best "boxes" or "container" to their clients. They focus on obtaining direct feedback from the individual who handle and use their containers on an everyday basis. Once they obtain they feedback, they design new containers according to their customer feedback in the house.
I learned a bit out "containers" in general. Cardboard boxes are the cheap boxes for those who are really price conscious. Wooden containers are looked as the high-end container and plastic container fall in-between the cardboard and the wooden container. Price margins on such containers are quite thin, there efficient manufacturing operations are critical for profitable business. Although it seems liked Wenco does not directly practice any of the Six Sigma or lean principles, however, they seem to have a good grasp of the concepts without official training.
Our tour guide was a fun guy. He told us about the automation related processes of Wenco. I was impressed regarding the amount of automation they had within the manufacturing facility. I expected to see a lot more operators on the floor, but there were only a handful of operators. Most of them seemed to be working in the assembly area of the final products. Overall, it was a great company to visit. Also, their spread of cookies was impressive.
