Here is the list of most common Chilean Etiquette:
- Chileans are very warm and welcoming! They stand closer than people here. So don't back away because that might be considered rude.
- Don't hit your left palm with your right fist. This is considered offensive.
- Make direct eye contact with people.
- Greet everyone in the group individually.
- If you are going to someone's home for dinner, send them flowers beforehand and bring a small gift or wine for the host/hostess.
- Don't gift knives or scissors to anyone. It symbolizes 'cutting' of the relationship.
- Don't give purple, yellow or black flowers as a gift.
- Chileans are almost always 30 minutes late. That isn't considered rude.
- Never eat with your hands.
- Finish everything on your plate.
- Pour wine with your right hand only.
- Have business cards ready to hand out.
- It is common for people to interrupt. Don't take offense.
- Business attire is formal and conservative. Don't wear bright colors or excessive jewelry.
- Business is conducted face-to-face and not via phone or email.
- Don't expect a quick response to your email.
- You have to ask for the bill at the end of the meal. Don't expect to have a bill brought to you without asking.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes late for social functions.
- Women don't wear anything too revealing.
- It is common for men to stare at women. It is harmless.
- Wait to drink till a toast is made.
- Use Senor for men and Senora for women, if you don't their name.
- There are no separate checks.
- Family and friendship play a bigger role in business than your expertise.
