Unfortunately I was not able to attend the discussion with Courtney Kingston but I did read several articles about the business environment in Chile in order to try and learn more about the country.
One of the most interesting articles that I read discussed solar energy in Chile. Chile has had some of the most expensive electricity costs in South America, however, thanks to the rapid increase in solar energy these prices declined and are continuing to do so. Chile is the leading South American country in solar energy capacity and is now exploring the possibility of exporting some of the solar energy to its neighboring countries.
The Chilean solar energy businesses, government, and people have really used solar energy to their advantage. The Chilean government seems to have learned from the mistakes of Spain and Japan and decided not to offer any subsidies to solar energy companies so the government has not had to spend any money on solar energy. Other South American countries (and countries all over the world) should learn from Chile's solar energy model so that they can take advantage of this resource and reduce the harmful effects of other types of energy on the environment.
