Chile as a country is well submerged with a long history and deep culture. As a result, a number of festivals and celebrations take place throughout the year. Most of these festivals are hosted by a specific city, but some are celebrated all across the country. People gather from all parts of the country and even the world to come together and celebrate. Few of these festivals are Carnaval Andino Con La Fuerza del Sol, Fiestas Patrias, and Santiago a Mil.
Carnaval Andino Con La Fuerza del Sol is translated into Andean Festival with the Strength of the Sun. The festival takes place in February in a city called Arica. It's a three-day festival that celebrates the blending of the Spanish, indigenous people of the Andes, Catholics and other indigenous traditions. The festival is celebrated with lots of bright colors. Chilean, Peruvian, and Bolivians come together to dance as groups in lavish costumes.
Fiestas Patrias is translated into Patriotic Festivities. This celebrates the Chilean Independence Day, which falls on September 18th. The celebration is very similar to that of the U.S. All across the country; communities will have parades, air shows, barbecues (asados), etc. People will come together as a community to eat, drink, and celebrate. Compared to the celebration to that in the U.S, this Fiestas Patrias is often celebrated for few days to possibly a week. Chile's declaration of independence happened on the February 12th. However, the first governing body was created on September 18th, and thus is the reason it officially marked the beginning of the Chilean Independence.
Santiago a Mil is translated into Santiago by the Thousands. This is Chile's largest festival and is celebrated in Santiago for three weeks. This festival is about performing arts festival which includes theatre, dance, and music events. It was founded in 1994 by International Festival Foundation (a non-profit group) to help provide easy and affordable access to cultural events to the public. For the 2014 Santiago a Mil festival, it included 390 events compromised of stage shows, music, street theater, workshops, etc.
